Who Can Transfer a Domain?

To transfer a domain, it must be active and not expired. You must also be the current owner to start the process. The person you're transferring it to must first be a Domain Manager on the domain within your Net2Secure account. You also can’t transfer a domain that is in the middle of a verification process.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Invite the New Owner

First, you need to give the new owner permission to manage the domain.

  • Log in to your Net2Secure Control Panel.

  • Go to the Domains Dashboard.

  • Select the domain you want to transfer.

  • Click on Permissions, then choose Invite Domain Manager.

  • Enter the new owner’s name and email, then send the invitation.

  • The new owner must accept the invitation to become an active Domain Manager.

2. Start the Ownership Transfer

Once the new owner is a Domain Manager, you can initiate the transfer.

  • In the Domains Dashboard, select the domain again.

  • Go to Permissions.

  • Click the three-dot menu (...) next to the new manager's name.

  • Choose Transfer Domain Ownership.

  • You'll be asked to re-authenticate by entering your password and a 2FA code if you have it enabled.

  • Click Send Confirmation Email to begin the process.

3. Confirm the Transfer Yourself

You will get an email with the subject line similar to “Confirm ownership transfer of [yourdomain.com]."

  • Open the email and click Start Ownership Transfer.

  • The transfer will not move forward until you click this link.

4. The New Owner Finishes the Transfer

The new owner will receive a separate email that says “Domain ownership transfer request for [yourdomain.com]”.

  • They must click Accept Domain Ownership, log in to their Net2Secure account, and confirm.

  • They will then be prompted to confirm an existing payment method or add a new one.

  • After they click Complete Ownership Transfer, both you and the new owner will get a final confirmation email.

What to Do After the Transfer

The new owner should immediately update the domain's registration information (called WHOIS data), including the contact email and organization name. Changing this information may require both the old and new domain owners to verify the changes via email.

Why This Process Matters

This secure process ensures that only the right people can take over your domain, preventing any unexpected changes. It also helps with billing transparency by allowing you to separate payment responsibilities, which is especially useful when managing multiple domains. This is the best way to smoothly hand over a domain without any service interruptions.
